How long do I have to complete the NEBOSH International General Certificate qualification?
All 3 units must be completed within five 5 years to achieve the full NEBOSH International General Certificate qualification.

Should I go straight for the NEBOSH International Diploma, or start with the International General Certificate?
The NEBOSH IGC course is an ideal place to start as it gives a broad grounding in the field of health and safety. The NEBOSH National Diploma course will build on knowledge gained at this level. Whilst it is not necessary to have a pre-qualification to take the NEBOSH International Diploma, we would highly recommend it.
How is the NEBOSH International General Certificate assessed?
Units IGC1 and GC2 are assessed by two 2-hour written exams of 10 ‘short-answer’, 8-mark compulsory questions and 1 ‘long-answer’, 20 mark compulsory question. GC3 is a 2-hour practical examination carried out in your own workplace. The papers are marked by external examiners who are appointed by NEBOSH
NEBOSH Health & Safety at Work Award

The NEBOSH Health & Safety at Work Award is a 3 day course aimed at anyone needs to understand the principles of health & safety as part of their role covering risk assessments and how to control common workplace hazards. It is the first step towards higher NEBOSH qualifications.

Is the NEBOSH Health & Safety at Work Award for me?
The NEBOSH Health & Safety at Work is for staff with responsibility who need to understand the basic of health and safety in their role. The course is aimed at team leaders/ supervisors, HR professionals, facilities managers and those working with young people in a training environment.
What is covered?
The course consists of two units: ‘Workplace Safety Foundations’ and ‘Workplace Risk Assessment Activity’.
Workplace Safety Foundations covers the foundations of health & safety including:
- Responsibilities for health & safety
- The principles of risk assessment and control
- Hazards and controls in the following areas: work equipment, transport, electricity, fire, manual handling, hazardous substances and the working environment
Workplace Risk Assessment Activity requires candidates to complete a risk assessment to demonstrate:
- The abilities to identify workplace hazards
- Determine the adequacy of existing controls
- Make prioritised recommendations for additional controls
- Determine an appropriate review date
How is the course assessed?
Workplace Safety Foundations is assessed by a 1 hour, 40 question, multiple choice test paper while Workplace Risk Assessment Activity requires candidates to complete a 1 hour practical workplace risk assessment. Click here to book your NEBOSH Health & Safety at Work Award exam.
Candidates need to successfully complete both units within a two year period to obtain the overall qualification.
The course has been developed to be “broadly comparable” to a vocationally related qualification (VRQ) at level 2 in the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) (comparable to GCSE standard). VRQ’s are nationally recognised, flexible qualifications that offer a route for academic and career progression. They are designed to provide practical skills as well as subject knowledge.
